Modern living can often be stressful and it is no surprise that after a hard long day at work or school, most people just want to go home and decompress by sitting on the couch and comfort eat. The problem however, begins when food becomes too comforting instead of being what it’s supposed to be; nourishing. The difference between mindless and mindful eating is that the first is done unconsciously as a coping mechanism to deal with emotional problems that have nothing to do with food, while the latter is when one eats consciously, relishing on every bite.

Mindless Eating:

  • Eating in front of the TV, computer or phone
  • Eating when “bad” emotions run high e.g. anxiety, sadness, boredom, loneliness
  • Not stopping when full

Mindful Eating:

  • Eating slowly without distractions
  • Eating because you feel hungry
  • Stopping when full
