In continuation of our Part 1 article here, please find 5 more tips on how you can keep yourself mentally healthy and safe during these challenging times.

Once again, special thanks to Dr. Alexandra Nicholson for taking the time out of her busy schedule in London to write these little pearls of wisdom for us.

Healthy eating and drinking– Eating healthily and regularly (to keep your blood sugar stable) helps your mood, energy levels and clears the mind. Stay hydrated and avoid drinking too much alcohol.

Exercise– We all know how important exercising is to our physical and mental health. Try scheduling in some time to move (such as a walk) or exercise during your day or week. This can include dancing to music, conducting an online exercise class or cleaning your home.

Prioritise self-care and carry out enjoyable activities-Try to schedule in time to carry out activities that you enjoy whether that is playing games, finishing jigsaw puzzles, drawing, consuming or creating art, having a bubble bath or more. Doing things that we enjoy boosts our mood. For some getting through the day is enough, for others taking up a new hobby might be appropriate. Ask yourself how YOU might care for YOURSELF!

Limit the news where needed– Stay updated on current affairs from trusted news sources so that you may stay safe and well, but switch off or limit your news consumption if you find that it is leaving you feeling anxious.

Better manage your anxiety and practice relaxation-Here are some ideas of how you might better manage your anxiety: practise deep breathing, bring your attention to the present moment (e.g. practicing mindfulness), focus on the day to day and on the positive aspects of your life. You can also write a gratitude list, remind yourself that this will not last forever, reframe any unhelpful or negative thoughts with more self-compassionate ones (e.g. “I am
doing the best I can”) and/or write in a journal. What things do you find relaxing? Is it yoga? Is it being in your garden with nature? Playing a musical instrument?
